The San Diego State Aztecs are the only remaining unbeaten team in college basketball at 23-0, and are currently No. 4 in the AP Poll and No. 1 in the NET Rankings.

A huge part of this team’s success has been junior guard Matt Mitchell playing an extremely important role each game.

He played his first two seasons at San Diego State in the starting lineup but was moved to sixth man this season. Mitchell has not only provided huge minutes off the bench as one of the team’s top three scorers, but was also in the talks for 6th man of the year, scoring nearly 12 points off the bench per game.

This was until Aztecs starting forward Nathan Mensah went down with a pulmonary embolism and was forced to miss the remainder of the regular season. That was when Mitchell was called off the bench and has been one of the top players on the team since then, averaging 13.3 points per game as a starter, and most recently, scoring a season-high 28 points in the Aztecs’ comeback win over Utah State.

That being said, I asked Matt a few questions about the Aztecs this year:

Q: First of all, what’s it like being the last undefeated team in the nation?

A: “It’s nice to be there but at the same time we don’t get a banner for it so we try to stay grounded and focused on winning more games and not being caught up into the hype too much.”

Q: What does it mean to you and the players to have broken such a historic record knowing the past of the basketball program and the superstars that have played there like Kawhi.

A: “It means a great deal it’s a blessing to be a part of that discussion but at the same time they made it to a sweet sixteen and when the time comes, we will have goals that hopefully exceed that.”

Q: This is your third year now. How does this team feel different compared to the team in your first two seasons?

A: “I think this team’s chemistry is unreal. We move at a great pace on offense and move the ball and we love to play defense.”

Q: How has this team had so much success on the road and what does it say about the players and coaching staff?

A: “I think it shows our toughness and our grit. I think that it also shows that no matter what the wave of the game is, we can ride it steadily and all be on the same page.”

Q: Do you prepare differently for different levels of competition such as the Wyoming game a few weeks ago compared to any of the last three games?

A: “We treat every opponent equally, don’t take anyone lightly and we want to stay on course and not be easily detoured.”

Q: What impact has getting transfers like Malachi Flynn and Yanni Wetzell had on the team?

A: “Great impacts there, a big help on both sides of the floor. Mal and KJ have done an exceptional job running the show this year along with Trey Pulliam.”
