Aztec Notes: Basketball season begins, fall sports start to wrap-up

Men’s Basketball just began their season, winning the season opener Nov. 9 when the UC Riverside Highlanders travelled to the Steve Fisher Court at Viejas Arena. The Aztecs won 66-53 behind senior transfer Matt Bradley’s 23 points, the most in an Aztec debut since Jerome Habel scored 23 points in 2006. However, their second game did not go well as they dropped their first road game of the season in Provo, Utah, losing to BYU, 60-66.

When they return to action at home, they will face the Arizona State Sun Devils and UT Arlington Mavericks Nov. 18 and 20.

Women’s Basketball opened their season on College Opening Day against Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles, beating them soundly, 72-57, after a 41-27 starting half. Senior Sophia Ramos led the team with 21 points and five rebounds. Junior Mallory Adams shot 6-for-8 from the floor, and 3-for-5 in three-point attempts along with three rebounds.

They will begin their first road trip this weekend, playing the UC Irvine Anteaters Nov. 14 and the Cal State Fullerton Titans Nov. 16, before coming back to Viejas Arena Nov. 20 to play Georgia Southern.

Women’s Cross Country wrapped up their regular season on Nov. 12, travelling to Sacramento, Calif. for the NCAA West Regionals. They finished 23rd of 36 teams, with top individual Jessica Kain rounding out the top 100 of 237 runners at 21:46.5 in the 6K (approx. 3.7 miles) race. The other six runners from San Diego State finished in the top 180, with the final runner finishing at 23:03.2.

San Diego State finishes their cross country season with their best races in the University of Arizona’s Dave Murray Invitational (second-place of five teams) and UC Riverside’s Highlander Invitational (fifth-place out of 25 teams).

Football continued playing close games when they defeated the Nevada Wolf Pack, 23-21, with strong defense, clutch offensive plays on fourth down, and phenomenal punting and field goal kicks. Senior quarterback Lucas Johnson threw for 176 yards on 21 completions and one passing touchdown. Senior running back Greg Bell ran for 104 yards on 16 carries. Junior kicker-and-punter Matt Araiza kicked for three field goals, including a 35-yard game-winner with 1:21 remaining, and averaged 54 yards on punts.

They now own sole possession of the West Division and hold a spot for the Mountain West Conference championship game with two games remaining. San Diego State completes their road schedule Friday, Nov. 19 when they travel to Las Vegas, Nev. for a West Division matchup with the UNLV Rebels.

Men’s Soccer finished their season off with a 4-1 loss to the no. 22 UCLA Bruins on Senior Night, honoring three seniors on the San Diego State roster Nov. 12. Junior forward Austin Wehner scored his first goal of the season, and freshman forward Alex Hjaelmof was credited with the assist.

Unfortunately for the Aztecs, the season ended after San Diego State posted a (2-7) record in conference play in the PAC-12 (there is no Mountain West Conference in men’s soccer). They finished with a (8-7-2) overall record.

Women’s Swimming & Diving enters the Phil Hansel Invitational, hosted by the Houston Cougars, Thursday, Nov. 18 through Saturday, Nov. 20. They last competed Oct. 23 when they finished first in a quad dual between the Loyola Marymount Lions, Grand Canyon Antelopes and Seattle Redhawks.

Earlier in the fall season, they finished second in the Chick-Fil-A Invitational hosted by Fresno State Bulldogs, and won against the San Diego Toreros and Pepperdine Waves.

Women’s Volleyball finished their road schedule with two conference losses to the Air Force Falcons (2-3) and New Mexico Lobos (0-3). Senior Victoria O’Sullivan led the Aztecs with 18 kills and an ace at Air Force. Freshman Reagan Merk recorded an ace for the Aztecs at New Mexico.

San Diego State owns a (7-21) record during the season, while going (4-12) in conference play with two matches left. They will cap off the regular-season with the Nevada Wolf Pack Thursday, Nov. 18 and the San Jose Spartans for Senior Day Saturday, Nov. 20.
