The lone remaining unbeaten team in college basketball, San Diego State was handed the task of playing one of the top scoring teams in the Mountain West, the Nevada Wolfpack.

It was an extremely close game at halftime, granting the Nevada Wolfpack a 35-33 lead, which certainly gave the Aztecs a scare. However, they were able to take control in the second half, eventually winning 68-55.

With the victory, the Aztecs improved their record to 19-0 (8-0 MWC) while the Wolfpack fell to 11-8 (4-3 MWC). The lopsided second half was led by Yanni Wetzell, who finished with 17 points and 16 rebounds.

Nevada guard Jalen Harris had a great night despite the loss, scoring 19 points with seven rebounds and went 5-10 on three-point shots.

Seemingly, since Aztecs forward Nathan Mensah’s injury, Wetzell has been able to step up and play at his best ability, averaging nearly 18 points in the last four games without Mensah.

Forwards Malachi Flynn, Jordan Schakel, and Matt Mitchell of the Aztecs also had good nights, with Flynn scoring 14, Schakel scoring 12 and Mitchell scoring 11.

With a 19-0 start, the Aztecs are just two wins away from breaking the program record for most consecutive wins and the best start to a season in school history.

Although ESPN has predicted an undefeated season for the Aztecs, being a top-five nationally ranked team will put a huge target on their backs for Mountain West opponents.

The showdown with the Wolfpack on Saturday night proved this point clearly. In games where the Aztecs are highly favored and are expected to win, they might fall into the trap and allow a huge upset. No game on their schedule for the rest of the way will be easy, no matter the circumstances.

The Aztecs next face the Wyoming Cowboys Jan. 21 at Viejas Arena with tip-off at 8 p.m. PT.
