On a night where the Utah State fanbase brought a sellout crowd to Dee Glenn Smith Spectrum in Logan, Utah, the No. 13 San Diego State Aztecs prevailed with a huge road win over the defending Mountain West champion Utah State Aggies.

The long-awaited matchup was full of excitement and high energy from the start. This big statement set by San Diego State kept an undefeated season alive, improving their record to (15-0), and in the process, ending a 15 game home win streak for the Aggies that had lasted for nearly a year.

Utah State was slightly favored heading into the game, but were silenced by a strong Aztecs defense. Although the Aggies were upset at home in this game, they played a very hard-fought game and didn’t give the Aztecs any free points.

San Diego State took a 7 point lead into the half, and eventually stretched that lead to 16. However, Utah State started multiple runs in an attempted comeback led by Neemias Queta who was questionable entering the game, and senior guard/defending Mountain West Player of the Year, Sam Merrill.

Queta, although limited, scored 15 points with 14 rebounds, while Merrill put up 26 points.

Although on the statsheet it looked like Merrill dominated the Aztecs, he was tightly defended by Aztecs guards and had to fight for each point he put on the board.

The strong San Diego State performance against Aggies’ leaders Merrill and Queta was led by guard Malachi Flynn with 22 points, and Matt Mitchell with 19 points and seven rebounds.

Another top performer on the night was Yanni Wetzell who was guarded by Utah State all-star and seven-footer Neemias Queta. Although tightly guarded all game, Wetzell managed to put up 10 points and five rebounds.

It will be a night long remembered by both Aztecs and Aggies fans, for it was a very tightly-contested game and each team should be well respected by fellow Mountain West Conference teams after the night game showdown.
