The San Diego State Aztecs improve to 3-0 on the basketball season with their first win over Grand Canyon in program history. Led by top scorers Nathan Mensah, Malachi Flynn and KJ Feagin, the Aztecs get back in a three-way tie for first in the Mountain West Conference.

The Aztecs led at the half, 40-24, with junior Matt Mitchell leading the scoring for nine points off the bench. The two teams were going back and forth with the lead before the Aztecs opened up the game with a 9-0 run to increase their lead from 19-16 to 28-16.

San Diego State went the final eight minutes of the half going 12-6 and they led by 16 against Grand Canyon University.

The Aztecs put together a better offensive second half but their defense got worse with a 46-37 half, San Diego State’s second best scoring half of the season (trailing their opening half by three, 48-45).

After missing all but two games last season, senior KJ Feagin put together his first back-to-back 10-point performances since the 2017-18 season when he averaged 17.5 points per game.

Through three games this season, junior guard Malachi Flynn has averaged 15.3 points per game. That mark is 0.5 less than his career-high set last season at 15.8. With plenty of games left in the season, Flynn can easily surpass that career high in his third season of college basketball.

The bench put together a total of 32 points between six scorers. The top point leaders from the San Diego State bench include Matt Mitchell (9), Keshad Johnson (6) and Adam seiko (6).

After a 86-61 win over Grand Canyon, the Aztecs will get a week in preparation for the rivalry game between the two San Diego Division I teams at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
