The nationally ranked No. 7 San Diego State Aztecs (15-0, 4-0 MWC) travel to Laramie, Wyoming, Jan. 8 to face the Wyoming Cowboys (5-11, 0-4 MWC).

The two schools have met 83 times, and the Aztecs have won seven of the last nine meetings. San Diego State slightly leads the all-time series 42-41, however they are only 10-27 in Wyoming and 2-2 when ranked in the AP Top 25.

Although Wyoming has had their fair share of troubles already this season, but it would not be the first time the Cowboys upset a top 10 Aztecs team. In 2014, the Aztecs got to their highest ranking in the AP poll ever at No. 3 before they were upset on the road, 68-62 against Wyoming.

San Diego State has the better team this year and it isn’t much of a comparison, however, the Aztecs have been known to struggle in Laramie in the past due to the electric crowd and high altitude.

This Aztecs remains one of two unbeatens remaining in all of college basketball along with the Auburn Tigers (13-0) who host Vanderbilt Wednesday night. San Diego State is also the leader in Quad 1 wins with an unbeaten (5-0) record. Not only did the Aztecs move into the top 10 in the AP Poll this week, they remain the No.1 team in the NET Rankings.

They got a win on Saturday in possibly their biggest game of the year, doing so without forwards Nathan Mensah (upper respiratory issues) and Aguek Arop (shoulder). Both will sit out again against Wyoming but the absence of these players have not affected the team’s play.

A lot of the Aztecs success this year compared to an average season last year has been a result of the program’s recruiting, having picked up three key transfers in Yanni Wetzell (Vanderbilt), Malachi Flynn (Washington State), and KJ Feagin (Santa Clara). All three players are starters for San Diego State, and Flynn and Wetzell have arguably been the two most important players for this Aztecs team this year.

As for Feagin, he was the leading scorer for Santa Clara last year, but has had quite a bit of trouble adapting to this Aztecs system, where he has to sacrifice minutes to a stellar Aztec bench and fellow guards. His last year at Santa Clara, Feagin was averaging 17.5 points, 4 assists, 44% field goal percentage and 37.2% three-point percentage. This year, his numbers have dropped dramatically to 7.2 points per game, 32.8% FG Pct. and 29.6 3-PT Pct. His assists have even dropped to 3.5 per game despite playing with more talented players at SDSU than at Santa Clara.

Feagin has struggled to change his style of play from team leader to team player and contributor. Can this Wednesday night game against a weak opponent in Wyoming help Feagin improve his game, and ultimately earn more minutes in his role as the Aztecs guard? Well, as the program moves into Mountain West Conference play in a generally weak conference for the Aztecs, Feagin might be able to adjust his game completely and begin to play like he did in his days at Santa Clara again. This could be the game where we find out, against a weak opponent in Wyoming.

A highlight for the struggling Wyoming Cowboys team this year has been sophomore guard Hunter Maldonado who is averaging 18 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game.

Maldanaldo will be put to the test against Aztecs superstar guard Malachi Flynn who is averaging 15.9 points, 5.1 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game. Flynn vs. Maldonaldo will be the key matchup to watch in this one.

The Wednesday night showdown starts at 6 p.m. PT from Arena-Auditorium in Laramie, Wyoming on the Mountain West Network.
