San Diego Sockers captain Kraig Chiles scored a hat trick in the Sockers’ 7-4 win over the Kansas City Comets that extended their win streak to six games.
Two of Chiles’ goals came assisted by forward Gabriel Costa, the first two connections between the two teammates this season. Both scores came very similarly with Chiles positioned to the goalkeeper’s right next to the goal.
“We have a lot of new additions that are playing a lot of minutes,” Chiles said. “I think the more we can continue to link up throughout the year, the better off the team’s going to be.”
Chiles’ other goal put the Sockers ahead with under a minute remaining in the third quarter on a penalty shootout that was awarded when Kansas City goalkeeper Phillip Ejimadu committed a foul as the last defender. Chiles missed a second penalty shootout in the fourth quarter that was awarded for a handball by Ejimadu outside the box.
It was Chiles’ first hat trick of the season, giving him five goals this season. Only Luiz Morales (7) and Tavoy Morgan (6) have more goals on the Sockers this season.
Costa nailed the game’s first score from distance after he found a clear line to the goal to the goalkeeper’s right. Midfielder Charlie Gonzalez recorded the assist on that play.
Gonzalez followed that up with a goal of his own in the second quarter that gave the Sockers a 2-0 lead.
Sebastian Mendez followed up a Kansas City goal, assisted by Tavoy Morgan, that gave the Sockers another two-goal lead and some breathing room in the fourth quarter.
Christian Gutierrez netted the game’s final score on an empty net after he got around the sixth attacker as he walked it in.
Morgan was limited in his contributions on the scoresheet until late in the fourth quarter but he was covered heavily by the Kansas City defense and oftentimes double covered which left more Sockers players open.
The main defender on Morgan was former Sockers defender Guerrero Pino who rejoined his hometown team this past offseason after six seasons in San Diego.
“We know how he plays and we know his style and we tried to pressure everything so he could make a mistake,” Morgan said. “They’re going to try to double me. I’m going to try to find my teammates so they gave me a lot of space.”
The game got chippy after Sockers general manager and assistant coach Chiky Luna was given a yellow card for dissent after he argued with a referee who had cursed at one of the Sockers players during the intermission between the first and second quarters.
A bench warning was given to the Sockers during the second quarter when multiple personnel from the bench, that included players on the bench, minutes into the quarter when they argued for another foul that was not called.
Players on both teams got into an altercation in the fourth quarter after a foul was called on the Sockers and a Comets player took the ball from the arms of a Sockers player.
The Sockers lost their challenge in the second quarter when the Comets scored their first goal of the game but a Comets attacker bumped into Sockers goalkeeper Boris Pardo while he attempted a screen. Sockers head coach Phil Salvagio eventually threw his challenge flag but the refs ruled it too late and the Sockers lost their challenge for attempting a challenge that wasn’t legal.
“The guy bumped into me. He’s trying to screen but he’s interfering with me and he bumped me, and so I can’t get my hands up, so it’s a foul,” Pardo said.
The Sockers maintained their perfect record at Frontwave Arena with wins in each of their first five games in the arena’s debut season.
