As Oceanside native Megan McCray dominated her qualifying draw match in the TaliMar Rancho Santa Fe Open, local high school junior Alyssa Ahn won both sets in her match on the next court over as she used the entire court with her perfect placement and a powerful strike.

In the final set, Ahn started out down three games to none and “I was forced to play my best tennis to come back and eventually pull off the really close set.”

She would finish the match with 6-4 and 7-6 wins with a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker round of the final set.

“I think I’m very physical on the court. I like to move a lot. And I just try to control from inside the court,” Ahn said.

​​McCray won her opening set, 6-3, before she swept the final set six games to zero as she only got better as the game went on.

“It’s always amazing playing here at home and I used to train here a lot, so I know the courts and stuff and everyone is so supportive here in San Diego,” McCray said. “It feels good to be home and have the tournament close by.”

McCray and Ahn move on to the second round of the qualifying draw with the winners of the matches Tuesday moving on to the main draw, which begins Wednesday, October 11.

• Forner University of San Diego All-American Solymar Colling lost both sets against Argentina’s Melany Solange Krywoj, despite some good plays in the second set, but enjoyed getting to play in San Diego again.

“I love it here, it’s super nice. The courts are nice, love John and everyone who works here,” Colling said. “It feels great to be back here.”

• Serra High alum Haley Giavara awaits her first matches in the singles and doubles main draws with her doubles partner Lulu Sun (Switzerland) against Serbia’s Andjela Skrobonja and Romania’s Andreea Velcea. Giavara awaits her first-round matchup in the singles as the qualifying draw wraps up Tuesday.

• The tournament continues Tuesday at the Rancho Santa Fe Tennis Club with the second round of the single qualifying draws. The singles main draw begins Wednesday.
