Making his third start since recovering from Tommy John surgery, Garrett Richards didn’t last through the fourth inning, going just three plus one-third innings.
Richards struggled with his command, giving up four free passes to Dbacks hitters, but still held Arizona to one-hit during his outing. He exited the game with a 2-1 San Diego lead in the fourth.
Manny Machado started his first game out of the no. 3 spot in the lineup. Machado hit cleanup and launched a 2-run jack in the third to put San Diego on top. A frame later, Luis Urias hit his fourth dinger of the year.
The Padres added on in the sixth and seventh innings on a Luis Urias run-scoring single and Eric Hosmer’s 11th homer on the road that put the Padres up by four.
David Bednar entered the game in the seventh inning, ordered to keep a 5-1 lead for the visiting team. Bednar loaded up the bases before giving up the deciding blow, a grand slam off the bat of Arizona’s top rookie Christian Walker, which was his second roundtripper of the season.
The Padres couldn’t recover and dropped the middle game of the series, making them the loser in 11 of their last 12 games. The Padres will send right-handed pitcher Michel Baez for his first career start in the big leagues in the season finale, while the Dbacks send right-hander Taijuan Walker at Chase Field.
