Jonny Richardson - September 22, 2019

Garrett Richards did not make the Petco Park debut Padres fans were hoping for as he went just 1⅔ innings. Richards struck out only two Dbacks and threw just 38 pitches.

Managing his second game with the Padres, Rod Barajas went with seven pitchers out of the bullpen, who combined for 8 ⅓ shutout innings. Two walks, four hits and eight strikeouts later, Matt Strahm came out with the win in his first extra-inning outing of 2019, and his third win since rejoining the San Diego bullpen.

In 10 innings of baseball at Petco Park, the Padres scored in pairs in three separate frames. In the fourth inning, Padres rookie and San Diego State alum, Ty France, launched his seventh roundtripper of the season, which cut Arizona’s 4-0 lead in half.

In the sixth with two outs and a pair of runners on base, Seth Mejias-Brean made it a one-run game with a lined single over the head of the infielders. On the next pitch, pinch-hitter Francisco Mejia tied the game up at four apiece with a double.

In the first extra-inning chance for interim manager Rod Barajas, he handed the ball to Matt Strahm, who struck out the first batter and induced a groundout and flyout on 10 pitches. Offensively, Greg Garcia led off the tenth with a first-pitch double. On the fourth pitch of the frame for Arizona’s Yoan Lopez, the 9-year minor league journeyman Seth Mejias-Brean hit his first career walk-off with his second trot around the bases of the month of September.

Mejias-Brean capped off a career game, going 3-for-4 to go along with a run-scoring single and a game-winning, walk-off four-bagger.

The Padres get an off day Monday before the home series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers. With six games left of 2019, San Diego will see their starters for the last time this year. Ronald Bolanos (0-1, 5.79) will get his third career start against Los Angeles’s Rich Hill (4-1, 2.68). First pitch for the final series opener at Petco Park is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
