Jonny Richardson - September 21, 2019

The late surge of San Diego’s rotation continued with Cal Quantrill’s one-run ball through five innings. His six strikeouts on the night was the most Quantrill struck out in over a month (Aug. 20 at CIN).

In recent days, Eric Lauer (Sept. 20 vs ARI), Dinelson Lamet (Sept. 18 at MIL), Chris Paddack (Sept. 17 at MIL) and Garrett Richards (Sept. 16 at MIL) each turned in great outings. In the 5 starts, including Saturday night, the rotation combined for 25 ⅔ innings, while giving up eight runs (earned) and striking out 43 hitters.

On the offensive side of the ballgame, the Padres could only tack on five hits on the night, and they went a measly 1-for-5 (.200) with runners in scoring position (RISP). Eric Hosmer’s run-scoring single in the eighth was the only attack with RISP the entire night. Hunter Renfroe put the Padres on the board in the fifth with a solo homer to cut the 2-0 deficit in half.

The Padres will look to avoid the sweep and break a stretch of 10 games in which they have only won once. Garrett Richards (0-1, 7.36) will make his San Diego debut as he makes his second start of 2019. Richards will go for his first win in his new franchise as well as Rod Barajas as manager as he fills in for the fired skipper Andy Green.
