Trying to end a 4-game skid, San Diego, led by pitcher Joey Lucchesi and outfielder Wil Myers, defeated the Rockies and brought the season series within one game with four more games left to play between the pair of teams.

Joey Lucchesi started out attacking hitters, and was perfect the first time through the Rockies’ order. He ran into trouble in the fourth, giving up the perfect game, then the no-hitter, and then walked the bases loaded, but Lucchesi escaped the jam. The southpaw went two more innings, tallying 8 strikeouts and going 6 shutout frames for his team-leading 10th win.

Craig Stammen, Andres Muñoz, and Kirby Yates kept the shutout in tact with 3 scoreless innings. The bullpen has a streak of 7 2/3 scoreless innings, with 6 of those innings coming against a high-scoring Rockies offense. Kirby Yates recorded his 40th save of the season in San Diego’s 3-0 win over Colorado.

Wil Myers put the Padres on the board and broke the scoreless tie with a solo bomb in the 5th inning. The game-winning homer was his second roundtripper in 3 games, and third in 6 games. Since the all-star break, Myers has increased his .217 batting average (BA) to his now-.237.

Manny Machado added on in the sixth with a 2-run jack to right field. Machado has been in a month-long slump, and it was just his third homer since July 30th. He was batting .211/.281/.317 in 32 games in that span.

The Padres went mashing again, and added to the already franchise-best season in terms of power. Their 202 dingers is 13 more than their previous best (189 in 2017).

The shutout is their fourth on the year and first since June 17 against Milwaukee.

The Padres will go for the series and try to tie up the season series with Colorado in a day game on Sunday. Lefty Eric Lauer (8-8, 4.55) goes for his 9th win of the season as right-handed pitcher Peter Lambert (2-6, 7.19) takes the ball for the Rockies.
