Coming into the game, the Padres were on a 3-game losing streak, and the Rockies were on a 9-game skid. Both teams have been struggling since the second half of the year began.

Dinelson Lamet took the ball for San Diego, and struggled in the first two innings of the ballgame. On 45 pitches, Lamet gave up 3 runs on 4 hits and a free pass. Nonetheless, the 27-year-old pitcher battled back and finished the next 4 innings with no problems, striking out two and walking none while giving up just two baserunners.

Michel Baez relieved Lamet and pitched a scoreless inning, while striking out one. Matt Strahm and David Bednar followed with a perfect inning each as the bullpen was shutout for another 3 innings on Friday night.

The Padres bats went cold, except the outbreak in the third, where the Padres scored their sole two runs off a 2-run single from Eric Hosmer.

The Padres will play the second of three on Saturday evening against the visiting Colorado Rockies. San Diego will try to end their 4-game skid with southpaw Joey Lucchesi (9-7, 4.00) on the mound against right-hander Jeff Hoffman (1-5, 7.35). First pitch is at 5:40 p.m. at America’s finest ballpark.
