Chris Paddack and the Padres open series in Philadelphia
Jonny Richardson - August 16, 2019

On Friday, Chris Paddack and the Padres will take on starter Vince Vasquez and the Phillies for the start of the second of two series between the two teams.

In the first meeting at Petco Park, the Padres defeated the Phillies 8-2 before dropping the final two games 6-9 and 5-7. The Padres won off a grand slam by Manny Machado in the first game, as Jay Bruce and Adam Haseley led the Phils to wins in games 2 and 3.

Chris Paddack gets the ball for San Diego in game one this time around. The young star will make his 21st start as he carries a 3.26 earned run average and a 7-5 record. Paddack faced the Phillies when they traveled to San Diego, but he didn’t fare that well. The Phillies lineup attacked Paddack for 8 hits and 6 runs (5 earned) in the right-hander’s 4⅓ innings. Chris Paddack will look to avenge his loss against the same Phillies team Friday night.

For Philadelphia, it’ll be Vince Velasquez taking the mound at Citizens Bank Park. The 27-year-old right-hander began the year as a starter, but went to the bullpen where he faced the Padres in the first meeting between the teams. Velasquez threw a perfect 1⅓ inning where he struck out 2 hitters in the series finale. The fifth-year pitcher entered back into the rotation in mid-June and hasn’t gone back since, making 9 starts. Vince Velasquez will look to extend his streak of giving up 3 or fewer runs to 5 games with a win over San Diego.

Ahead of Friday’s game, the Padres recalled infielder Ty France and outfielder Travis Jankowski. They will take the roster spots of infielders Fernando Tatis Jr. and Ian Kinsler who are both going onto the 10-day injured list.

The Phillies lineup, as of late, has been on fire, scoring an average of 7 runs since they fired their hitting coach 3 days ago. Their offensive highlights include multi-hit games from at least two players and Harper’s 2-homer game and walk-off grand slam.

The Padres lineup has also been doing much better lately as they averaged 6 runs per game over their 7-game homestand. The lineup will lose a great bat in the leadoff spot, but Ty France, who held a .399 batting average and .477 on-base percentage in Triple-A, will try to fill that hole.

Chris Paddack and the Padres will need to look out for the entire Phils lineup as they have really heated up since the hiring of their new hitting coach. But the big name to look for is Bryce Harper has he has an .880 slugging percentage in his last 7 games. Harper also has 4 hits and 3 home runs in his last 2 games, which adds up to 13 total bases.

The Padres’ aren’t without some fire power of their own, even with the loss of their rookie shortstop. Hunter Renfroe, who ranks 10th among major league leaders, has 31 home runs, which is already a career-high. Josh Naylor also has power of his own, as he has homered twice in the past week.

The game is ready for a 4:05 PM P.T. start in Philadelphia as Chris Paddack and Vince Velasquez go against each other for the first time. The game can be watched locally on Fox Sports San Diego or heard on the radio at 97.3 The Fan.
