In the biggest trade of the MLB Deadline thus far, the Padres acquire top 30 prospect, outfielder Taylor Trammell from the Cincinnati Reds, their no. 1 prospect. In 93 games Reds’ Double-A affiliate Chattanooga, Trammell batted .236/.350/.338 with a .688 OPS. The Reds’ no. 1 prospect is taking a walk 10% of the time and has tremendous speed. The Georgia-native also is 17-for-21 in the stolen base department.
The biggest name in the trade is right-handed pitcher, Trevor Bauer. The 28-year-old from California has had a history of trouble with big league teams and the Reds only took him to trade away Yasiel Puig. Bauer has spent 7 of his 8 big league seasons in Cleveland. In 2019, Bauer has a 3.79 earned run average in 24 games. His 156⅔ innings pitched, 664 batters faced, 63 walks, 14 hit batters leads the league.
The trade also involved the Cleveland Indians, who received the majority of the deal. From San Diego, Cleveland acquired outfielder Franmil Reyes, 21-year-old lefty Logan Allen, and rookie-ball 19-year-old Victor Nova who plays both infield and outfield. In 185 games with the Padres since 2018, Reyes was batting .265/.325/.518 with 43 bombs and 77 runs batted in. Rookie southpaw Logan Allen didn’t do as hot, acquiring a negative WAR and a 6.75 earned run average in 25⅓ innings. The smallest part of the deal was 19-year-old Victor Nova. In his second year of pro ball, Nova was batting .330/.421/.451 in 26 games with the Arizona League (AZL) Padres.
The Indians were the only team to acquire players from both teams, as they got outfielder Yasiel Puig and pitching prospect Scott Moss. The Indians most notable player is Cincinnati’s outfielder Yasiel Puig. The 1-time All-Star is batting .255/.305/.480 through 99 games in his first season as a Red. Scott Moss spent his entire 2019 season in the Reds’ Double-A team, throwing a 3.44 earned run average in 20 starts. He is striking out 10.9 hitters per 9 innings, with 102 innings total.
AJ Preller and co. seem to love Trammell’s tools and think he will be a “stud” in the big leagues. Look out for Taylor Trammell in the next year or two.
