Before Tuesday’s game between San Diego and San Francisco, the Padres announced they recalled Robbie Erlin and optioned Phil Maton back to Triple-A El Paso.
In his latest stint with the big league club, Phil Maton went 7⅓ innings while giving up 10 runs (all earned) and 14 hits, including 3 home runs. The 26-year-old right-hander brought up his earned run average from 5.50 to 7.77 in his 5 appearances. It is the fifth time he has been optioned to Triple-A this season. If he had a bright spot, it was his K/9 rate went up, striking out 7 batters in as many innings.
Robbie Erlin, the starter-turned-reliever, is back in San Diego for the third time in 2019. In his second stint with the ballclub, his earned run average reached as low as 3.29. However, when Erlin was optioned to Triple-A to work on his stuff, his ERA was all the way up to 5.40, the highest point of his season since April 9th. The Padres hope Erlin can go back to his 2018-self when he held a 2.05 ERA through 52⅔ innings as a reliever.
Also announced on Tuesday, outfielder Travis Jankowski who was out since the beginning of March, will go on a rehab assignment with Triple-A El Paso. Jankowski will have a long rehab after only playing 6 games in Spring Training in 2019, per multiple reports. He played in 117 games last season, slashing .242/.319/.321 through 347 at bats. He used his speed to hit 3 triples and steal 24 bases, which led the team.
