Baseball’s trade deadline is always the busiest trading season of the year. The Padres, who went into the all-star break at .500 for the first time since 2010, have a few choices to make. In the majority part of the decade, the Padres were sellers. Now they have the opportunity to become buyers and contend for their first playoff spot in nine years. And they have the farm system depth to afford a few guys. Here are 4 players the Padres could make a trade for:
The Padres have reportedly checked in regularly with the Detroit Tigers’ right-hander Matt Boyd. Although Preller isn’t committed to adding a starter, Boyd would fit in perfectly with San Diego as they are looking for a controllable starter for the next few years ahead of a young starting rotation in their hunt for playoff contention.
The Padres are reportedly frontrunners for the right-handed ace in Cleveland. Whether the Indians are trading him or not, is another question. The Indians are reportedly asking for outfielders Hunter Renfroe or Franmil Reyes in a package.
The Yankees’ 31-year-old reliever will reportedly opt out of his two remaining years in his contract after the season. With a really good bullpen already, it wouldn’t hurt for New York to trade Chapman to get something out of it. His 2.45 ERA in 36⅔ innings would be great for the Padres’ bullpen coming into the final two months of the year.
A reliever with a 4.50 ERA. Just what the Padres could use in their bullpen. Seriously. His 12.8 strikeouts per nine is a plus, and a WAR better than all but one pitcher in the bullpen. While his stats don’t look great at first glance, he has raw abilities that pitching coach Darren Balsley can turn into one of the game’s greatest relief pitchers. Givens would be the low-risk, high-reward type-of player that the Padres are looking for.
