The Padres scattered six hits throughout the day but they could not put together a scoring rally in their 2-0 defeat to the Seattle Mariners in a short two-game sweep.

During their now four-game losing streak, the Padres hit .209 – 28 for 134. They did not have a runner reach scoring position in 19 straight innings from the first inning Sunday until the second inning on Wednesday when Donovan Solano, Jackson Merrill and David Peralta hit consecutive singles to load the bases.

San Diego batters combined to go 1 for 6 with runners in scoring position and left seven runners on base on Wednesday.

“We didn’t get the big hit when we needed it,” manager Mike Shildt said.

In the second inning, the Padres hit three straight one-out singles. Ha-Seong Kim followed them with a flyout to center field that the Padres thought would be deep enough to score Solano, but he was cut down at home by Mariners center fielder Julio Rodriguez, his fourth outfield assist of the season.

That was their only major scoring chance until the eighth inning. With two outs, No. 9 hitter Brett Sullivan worked a seven-pitch walk and Luis Arraez singled but Jurickson Profar, who had hit well in clutch situations this season, struck out on five pitches to former Padres closer Andres Munoz.

The Padres opened the ninth inning with walks to Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado. Solano moved the runners over with a soft ground ball in the infield. Merrill struck out and Peralta hit a soft liner that found Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford to finish the game.

Seattle starter Bryce Miller tossed six shutout innings although he struck out only one batter – Cronenworth in the last batter Miller would face. He allowed five of the Padres’ hits.

Michael King outdueled Miller in some aspects – six innings, two runs (one earned), three hits allowed, one walk, nine strikeouts on 91 pitches – but ultimately tough luck and a defensive miscue were the difference.

Up next: The Padres will try to avoid a fourth five-game losing streak this season on Friday when they begin a three-game series with the Atlanta Braves after their off day Thursday. Right-hander Randy Vazquez (2-4, 4.66 ERA) gets the start in the series opener against Atlanta right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach (2-4, 5.02 ERA).
