The Gulls were one loss from being eliminated coming into the sixth game of the 2019 AHL Calder Cup Playoffs in Chicago. And on Monday night, the Chicago Wolves clinched their fourth AHL Calder Cup Final in franchise history. The Wolves took the series in six games after a 3-1 win over the Gulls.
In the first two periods, there was no action. No goals for either team, although there were 37 combined shots on goal. The Gulls went on a pair of power plays and a penalty kill. Once the second half of the third period hit, offenses went off. The Wolves attacked first when Curtis McKenzie scored off a Hague and Whitecloud assist. 19 seconds later, Keegan Kolesar scored on a controversial play as San Diego goaltender Kevin Boyle wanted an interference call. However, less than two minutes later, the Gulls cut the deficit in half after Sam Carrick scored his 7th postseason goal on their third power play. Ben Street and Andy Welinski made their 9th and 7th assists, respectively. The Wolves scored the fourth and final goal of the game another two minutes as Curtis McKenzie shot his second behind the net. San Diego pulled their goalie a few times, but were unsuccessful in getting another goal and dropped their season finale, 3-1.
The Chicago Wolves will head to the AHL Calder Cup Finals against the Charlotte Checkers. The series will begin the night of Saturday, June 1st, in Charlotte, North Carolina. As for the Gulls, they’ll head into the offseason in good spirits after making it all the way to the Western Conference Finals in a season where they weren’t supposed to make the playoffs. The 2019-2020 AHL season will be a great one for the Anaheim Ducks’ affiliate.
