The Gulls entered Game 5 looking to advance to their first Calder Cup Conference Finals. It would be a slow start as the Gulls would be called offsides twice in the opening seconds and not get a shot on goal in the first seven and a half minutes. Bakersfield would crack into the scoring column first while on a power play at 9:30 Joe Gambardella would score on the assist from Evan Bouchard for his sixth goal of the postseason. The Gulls would finally generate scoring chances in the final two minutes for the period, but Condors goalie Stuart Skinner would be up to the task keeping San Diego out of the net.
The first half of the second period would be a relatively quiet affair. The San Diego Gulls would have an effective penalty kill following Luke Gazdic’s interference at 5:07. The Gulls would tie up the game with an impressive sequence from Sam Steel to Corey Tropp to Kevin Roy who would score the goal. Both teams would add an additional penalty, and both teams had scoring chances, but both goalies were able to keep the puck from reaching the net.
After only eleven combined shots on goal in the third period, the Bakersfield Conders and San Diego Gulls with head to the third overtime of the series.
To start overtime Jeff Glass was put to test, but came through strong stopping nine shots in the first nine minutes of OT. Early in the period Glass had a stick save, rebound, followed by a glove save. The Gulls had chances on offense as well with twelve shots on goal. Those opportunities included a Kevin Roy shot that hit the post and a shot from Sam Steel that found the pads of Stuart Skinner. Jeff Glass would finish the first overtime period with twelve saves.
Jeff Glass would stand tall once again in the second overtime with a tremendous save on an odd man rush. He would stop the first seven shots on goal. The Gulls would also have chances with eight shorts on goal. It it would be Bakersfield that would come away with the win with a shot from Josh Currie at 13:02 in the second overtime.
Ben Street (6 shots) and Maxime Comtois (5 shots) would have chances but remain scoreless in the defeat. Jeff Glass would finish with 42 saves on the night. Game 6 will return to the Pechanga Arena on Monday, May 13 at 7 PM.
