Coming into Saturday night, the Growlers had won their last 6 games at home, dating back to June 17, 2018. The Growlers and Aviators were in a back-and-forth game before Los Angeles got a few breaks and took the lead. The Growlers were within one when a turnover with 17 seconds left cost the game.
Fresh off his all-star appearance, Jonathan ‘Goose’ Helton scored the first two goals and assisted the third, which tied up the game. Helton also made a couple of jumping catches and assisted the sixth goal of the game for San Diego.
“It was just make a play.. It was two against one, I just had to seal out the guy who was closest to the ball.” said Goose on his first goal.
In the second half, Goose jumped over the sideline and knocked the disc back in play for a goal. The original call was he was out of bounds but refs came together and changed their call to a goal for the Growlers. He also had another goal in the second half.
On the defensive side, Mark Slader led the team with 3 Ds and 10 pulls. Wes Groth and Jonathan Helton also had 2 Ds and Steven Milardovich had 6 pulls.
The first-place San Diego Growlers will face the last-place Seattle Cascades on Saturday, June 22nd, in the final stretch before the postseason. San Diego will need 2 wins or a win and an Aviators loss in the final 3 weeks to clinch home-field for the division finals. However, the only Aviators losses in 2019 have come against the Growlers, which they are done playing each other for the season (excluding the playoffs). The Cascades will need the Aviators to lose the rest of their games and for Seattle to win the rest to have a shot at the playoffs. The game starts at 6:00 PM PDT, and can be watched with a monthly subscription on AUDL.tv.
