The San Diego Mojo dropped their third straight match and lost their last eight consecutive sets after a 3-0 loss to the first-place Vegas Thrill.
San Diego’s last winning set came in the second set of their Jan. 30 match against the Atlanta Vibe in a 3-1 loss. They lost the last two sets in that match against Atlanta and were swept by the Grand Rapids Rise on Feb. 2 and Vegas.
“We’re still just finding some consistency and we’ve had a lot of lineup changes,” head coach Tayyiba Haneef-Park said. “We’re just trying to find that cohesion on the court.”
The Mojo’s largest lead at any point in any set was by two points with their latest lead at 15-13 in the opening set. They gave up five consecutive points then and never regained momentum in a 25-22 losing set. They lost 25-19 in the second set and 25-20 in the third set.
San Diego tied the third set at six apiece but never led at any point.
Outside hitter Elise McGhee, in her first professional start, led the team with 15 kills, including eight of the Mojo’s 11 in the third set.
McGhee had nine kills in eight sets played prior to Friday night.
Outside hitter Kendra Dahlke served a pair of aces in the second set that gave her a three-match ace streak and four in the last three matches.
She had been working on her serve the last couple days after she watched video of previous matches and didn’t like what she saw.
“Kind of historically it’s been very low,” Dahlke said about her serve. “This past couple of days that we had in practice was really just focusing on keeping it high, giving myself some time and staying patient with it.”
Middle blocker and San Diego-native Leyla Blackwell got her third ace of the season. She recorded a pair in the Mojo’s last game against Grand Rapids for her first professional ace.
Up next: The Mojo have a two-match midwest road trip that begins in Fishers, Ind. with a matchup against the Indy Ignite on Thursday, Feb. 13.
