San Diego Wave FC lose 4-3 in an eventful game capped by a stoppage time penalty kick, leaving Wave FC with no points in the nationally televised CBS road matchup.
San Diego got the scoring going early in the seventh minute of the match after a throw in Kelsey Turnbow passed it to Emily Van Egmond who found a running Jaedyn Shaw on the back post with a great cross. Shaw, in just her second appearance for San Diego, finished with her left foot taking an early 1-0 lead.
Washington Spirit quickly bounced back as forward Trinity Rodman set up a strong attack moving the ball up the field. Ashley Sanchez received a ball in the center just outside the box and was patient, drawing in the San Diego defensive line to allow her to pass it to Tara McKeown who had a clear look sending it in for the equalizer.
From that moment San Diego Wave did not appear to have another good look for the rest of the half because of the impassioned play of Washington, a team hoping to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Washington took their first lead later in the 30th minute following a set piece when Rodman sent the ball in deep into a dangerous position creating chaos while SD Wave defenders were unable to adequately clear the ball, instead deflecting it toward Amber Brooks with three defenders in front of her only gets off a simple toe poke toward the left side far from San Diego goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan making it 2-1.
Washington did not let up, scoring again in the 44th minute with the help of Brooks in using a similar strategy from the previous goal during a set piece. It was a corner kick sent to the far side of the box that Brooks just managed to get her head to, floating the ball over the goalkeeper's head making it 3-1 just before the end of the first half.
To this point San Diego had never let another team score three goals in any regular season match they’ve played and came back with a much more lively front line in the second half.
The second half scoring began with a penalty taken by Alex Morgan after an unclear foul in the 54th minute. Sheridan, who has been sending deep passes for Morgan all season, sent another one to the back third of Washington’s half for a charging Morgan who jumped for it in the air putting a head on it and taking a hit from Brooks just inside the box.
Morgan took the penalty and has excelled with penalties all season and was able to put in her league leading fifth penalty goal of the season leaving a one goal lead for Washington with 34 minutes left to play.
San Diego continued applying pressure and was finally able to convert one of their chances for a goal in the 82nd minute with another goal by Morgan. The goal came from a controversial corner kick after a Washington defender attempted to clear the ball just in front of the corner flag but was still called a corner kick.
With Washington frustrated with the call San Diego sent the corner kick to the front of the box for Morgan who was able to jump as she was turned around in the air and redirected the ball into the goal with the back of her head, equalizing the match at 3-3.
A draw would have clinched a playoff spot for San Diego; however, with seven minutes of stoppage time, Washington just managed to respond and take the win. A late attack inside San Diego’s box nearly won the game but the shot by Washington never came because of a late tackle by Van Egmond inside the box forcing a penalty kick.
Forward Ashley Hatch took the penalty and powerfully put the ball in on the left side despite a correct guess by Sheridan making the final score 4-3.
Wave FC returns home next week on Sept. 17 after nearly a month on the road with their opening of Snapdragon Stadium against rival Angel City FC, who is fighting to stay in the playoff picture. The match has already been announced as the largest crowd in NWSL history and will also seemingly be the most attended match in Snapdragon Stadium’s short history.
