Wave’s struggles at home continue with 2-1 loss to Angel City - Everything San Diego

In front of a crowd of 25,515 fans, first-place San Diego Wave FC fell to the last-place Angel City FC in a 2-1 loss on a sunny Saturday afternoon at San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium.

San Diego held the large majority of possession in the first 20 minutes but had maybe one actual opportunity on the goal.

Angel City made three shots wide in the opening half, and one shot on goal. In the 30th minute on a free kick, Sheridan ran to her left, diving for the shot as it went right of the net. She would dive for another shot to her left a few minutes later.

Angel City opened the second half on the attack for the majority of the first eight minutes, tacking on two shots on goal with Wave goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan saving both shots.

Defender Kristen McNabb notched the game’s first goal in the 57th minute when Alex Morgan found McNabb wide open right outside the box. The shot found the opposite side’s upper corner past Angel City goalkeeper Didi Haracic.

Angel City responded in the 70th minute with a Paige Nielsen goal that tied the match at one goal apiece. The midfielder netted her first goal of the season.

Sheridan made a huge save in the 81st minute, going to her right to make a stop that would’ve given Angel City its first lead of the match. Off the pass, Wave took the ball and made a cross that was intercepted in the center of the box and kicked out of bounds when Wave pressured in on the defense.

15-year-old Melanie Barcenas entered the match before the throw-in and the Wave nearly found the go-ahead score in the 83rd minute when Taylor Kornieck shot the ball on a header that was blocked by Angel City’s Haracic.

Mary Alice Vignola scored the game-winner for Angel City in the 88th minute, clinching their first win in six matches going back to May 7.

With six minutes of added time, Wave continued to put pressure on the Angel City defense but could not find the last-minute equalizer.

They host OL Reign for their next match on Saturday, June 24 at Snapdragon Stadium with a 7 p.m. start time.
