San Diego Wave FC announced another signing Wednesday morning as the season comes closer. Midfielder Giovanna DeMarco was selected in the fourth round of the 2023 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) draft, and after training with the club during the preseason, signed a one-year deal for the 2023 NWSL season.
“Giovanna is a talented young player who will add depth to our roster following her collegiate career at Wake Forest,” Head Coach Casey Stoney said. “We were excited to select her in the NWSL Draft and watched her progress with the team during preseason, seeing first-hand her qualities and mindset.”
With the Wake Forest Demon Deacons for five years, DeMarco scored 11 goals and seven assists in 74 appearances (69 starts). The 23-year-old midfielder placed third on the Demon Deacons last season and made an NCAA Tournament appearance in the 2022 college soccer season.
"I am so excited to have signed my first professional contract with the San Diego Wave,” DeMarco said. “This is a dream come true, and I can’t wait to play in front of the best fans in the league at Snapdragon Stadium.”
Wave opens their season on Saturday, March 25, with an NWSL quarterfinal rematch against the Chicago Red Stars at Snapdragon Stadium at 7 p.m. PT.
