In an exciting match held at Snapdragon Stadium, San Diego Wave FC faced off against the Washington Spirit in a thrilling showdown. From the opening whistle, both teams displayed a high level of skill and determination.
Wave FC started the game with an aggressive attacking strategy, applying constant pressure on the Spirit defense. The competition quickly began to get tougher. Wave FC’s defense was very busy the first half, as the Washington Spirit gave a serious offensive push.
In the 23rd minute, Washington’s Ashley Hatch scored a penalty conceded by Shae Yanez following a long VAR visit.
Not willing to back down, the Wave retaliated with a surge of their own. Their offense began to wake up with attempts by Maggie Dougherty and Taylor Kornieck. However, Spirit goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart showed remarkable reflexes, making a spectacular save to deny the opponents an equalizer.
As the game progressed into the second half, tensions rose, and both teams became more determined than ever. The San Diego crowd was treated to a display of exceptional skill as San Diego’s Cheyenne Shorts scored in the 46th minute to tie the game following a corner.
The Spirit re-gained the lead in the 54th minute on an own-goal by Shorts who just scored to open the half.
The rival team fought back fiercely, intensifying their attacks and pushing Wave FC’s defense to the limit. However, Wave FC’s backline demonstrated resilience and cohesion, stopping every attempt on goal.
In the dying moments of the game, Kelsey Turnbow made a cross pass to meet Taylor Kornieck at the center of the box, knotting the game at two goals apiece in the 90th minute with a perfect header to the top right corner tying the game.
Following nine minutes of stoppage time, the final whistle blew, giving both teams a point each on the table.
