San Diego Wave FC returns to Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday, August 5, for their first home match since July 8 when they finished a 2-2 draw with the Washington Spirit.
They will finish the UKG Challenge Cup with Angel City FC, who they have beaten once and lost to twice so far this season. They lost 2-1 in each of the last two matches between the two SoCal clubs on June 17 and June 28.
The Wave were eliminated from the Challenge Cup playoffs with just three points in five matches played so far. Their one win came in the Challenge Cup opener where they defeated the Portland Thorns, 1-0, at home on April 19. San Diego was outscored 10-2 in their next four matches.
San Diego is without their international stars in Naomi Girma (USA), Sofia Jakobsson (Sweden), Alex Morgan (USA), Kailen Sheridan (Canada), and Emily van Egmond (Australia).
Angel City will be without Jun Endo (Japan), Julie Ertz (USA), Ali Riley (New Zealand), and Alyssa Thompson (USA) for the Challenge Cup finale.
Angel City is on a six-match unbeaten streak that includes four 2-1 wins. The streak began in San Diego on June 17 where they stunned the Wave with two goals in the 69th and 88th minutes for a comeback victory. The streak also coincides with the firing of their head coach Freya Coombe. Assistant coach Becki Tweed replaced her, and since then, they have recorded 14 points in six matches (4-0-2).
The match begins at 4:30 p.m. at Snapdragon Stadium and can be streamed on Paramount Plus.
