A busy Friday night leads into another Saturday that gets off to an early start in the nation’s capital for the San Diego Wave and finishes with the Padres-Dodgers in the middle game of a three-game set.

LOYAL’S LANDON DONOVAN, WAVE’S JILL ELLIS JOIN NATIONAL SOCCER HALL OF FAME

San Diego Loyal SC President of Soccer Operations and former Head Coach Landon Donovan and San Diego Wave FC President Jill Ellis will be inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame as members of the Class of 2023 at 11 a.m. PT Saturday morning in Frisco, Texas. They join four others in today’s induction.

Donovan scored 57 goals and recorded 58 assists in 157 USMNT appearances. … Ellis led the USWNT to two World Cup championships in the 2015 and 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cups as the head coach.

TATIS HITS TWO HOME RUNS IN SERIES-OPENING VICTORY OVER DODGERS

Fernando Tatis Jr. became the first player in MLB to hit multiple home runs in a game off Clayton Kershaw twice. He was also the last player to hit two home runs off Kershaw on April 23, 2021. Yu Darvish went 6-⅔ innings pitched while giving up two runs (one earned) as the Padres defeated the Dodgers 5-2 in the series opener. It’s the second time the Padres took down the Dodgers in the first game of the head-to-head series since 2014 (also done so in 2020).

The Padres have won just two regular-season series against the Dodgers since 2020, with both of those coming in 2021.

RECAPPING MORE FRIDAY ACTION

The Seals’ season came to an unfortunate end in a 13-12 loss in the first round of the NLL playoffs to the defending champion Colorado Mammoth. … The Growlers fell to the defending division champion Colorado Summit in their season opener, 23-16. … SDSU Baseball completed a suspended game from March 10, winning the game 5-3 in San Jose, despite the game starting at San Diego State. Their second game was postponed due to inclement weather. … USD Baseball tied up the series with Brigham Young with an 8-4 home victory, advancing to a 14-9 conference record. … UCSD Baseball won on another walk-off, this time in 11 innings, over the CSU Northridge Matadors at the Triton Ballpark.

USD RUGBY CHASES 15s NATIONAL TITLE

After winning the National 7s last week, USD Men’s Rugby is back for another national title in the ACR D1-AA 15s National Championship today against Iowa State. The championship match kicks off at 11 a.m. PT/12 p.m. MT at Pleasant View Sports Complex in Boulder, Colo., streaming live on the “American College Rugby” YouTube channel.
