U.S. Women’s National Team star Jaedyn Shaw was traded to the North Carolina Courage in exchange for allocation money, the team announced on Jan. 14.
Shaw requested a trade early last season, sporting director and general manager Camille Ashton said in the Wave’s statement.
“While it’s always hard to see a player of her talent move on, we respect and understand her decision to seek a new chapter in her career and we’re happy we were able to help facilitate the move she wanted,” Ashton said.
The Wave, in exchange for Shaw, acquired $300,000 in allocation money, $150,000 in intra-league transfer funds and an international roster slot for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
The Wave could get an additional $75,000 in allocation money in exchange for $150,000 in intra-league transfer fees to the Courage if requirements are met in a conditional agreement between the two clubs. The Wave did not specify what those requirements would be.
“It’s been an absolute honor to start my professional career in this city and represent this club. The opportunity to pursue a new chapter is bittersweet, but I am excited about what lies ahead,” Shaw said in the Wave’s press release.
Shaw made her NWSL debut with the Wave on July 30, 2022, against the Chicago Red Stars and scored the game’s only goal in a 1-0 San Diego win.
She scored goals in each of her first three starts with the Wave in 2022. She scored six goals and assisted three others in 2023 as part of the Wave’s Shield-winning season.
Shaw missed two months of the season in 2024 with an injury sustained during the 2024 Olympics with the U.S. national team. She scored four goals and recorded one assist in 2024 with the Wave in 22 matches played (13 starts).
