San Diego Sports Daily is a daily feature on everything San Diego sports fans should know for each day.
After a slow week, we’re preparing for an action-packed weekend, beginning with a busy Friday night. Prepare for the week ahead with today’s Daily.
SEALS HOST MAMMOTH IN WIN-OR-GO-HOME QUARTERFINAL MATCHUP
After a franchise-best 14 wins during the regular season, resulting in a second straight West Division title, the San Diego Seals (14-4) face their toughest competition yet against the Colorado Mammoth (8-8), the defending NLL champions in a winner-takes-all first round matchup.
In the regular-season finale last week, the Seals defeated the Mammoth, 11-8, in a game that featured the most fighting all season. These teams don’t like each other. At all. And that will make this matchup even more entertaining. One team will advance, and the other’s season ends tonight.
The game begins at 7 p.m. at Pechanga Arena San Diego in the nos. 1 and 4 matchup.
PADRES TAKE TWO OF THREE VS. REDS, PREPARE FOR DODGERS SERIES
Winning five of their last six, the San Diego Padres host the only National League team currently on a better run in SoCal rival Los Angeles Dodgers this weekend.
This will be the first time the Padres and Dodgers play each other since the Padres took the NLDS last year in Game 4 at Petco Park. The players are excited, and while the Padres are 16-32 against the Dodgers since 2020, they have all the confidence against them.
Yu Darvish will make the start against the Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw in the series opener today at 6:40 p.m. at Petco Park.
GROWLERS HOST SUMMIT IN AUDL SEASON OPENER
The San Diego Growlers of the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL) begin their 2023 AUDL season Friday night with the Colorado Summit, the West Division regular season champion last year. They will host the Summit with the first pull at 7 p.m. at Mira Mesa High School.
Last season, the Growlers just made their way to the playoffs, taking the third and final playoff spot in the West Division, but lost to No. 2 Salt Lake Shred in the division semifinal, ending their Championship Weekend appearances streak at two seasons.
DUSTIN ALLEN EARNS NO. 1 PLAY ON SPORTSCENTER’S TOP 10 WITH HOME RUN ROBBERY
San Diego Baseball center fielder Dustin Allen robbed Brigham Young’s L. Anderson in the fifth inning of the game Thursday night in their home series opener. The Toreros continue their series with the Cougars tonight at 6 p.m. at Fowler Park.
STINGRAYS PADEL RELEASE INAUGURAL PPL SCHEDULE
The San Diego Stingrays of the Pro Padel League (PPL) recently announced their six-match schedule with the season opener at home on May 14 against the Toronto Polar Bears. The regular season culminates with a road match against the Cancun Waves on June 3.
They also announced their full roster that will be competing in the 2023 PPL season.
