UC San Diego earned its first trip to the women’s basketball NCAA Tournament as a Division I school after they won three consecutive games at the Big West Championships.
They did so with a convincing 75-66 win over No. 3 UC Davis in Henderson, Nev. at Lee’s Family Forum, the day after beating No. 1 Hawai’i, 51-49, in the semifinal.
The Tritons were the No. 4 seed entering the tournament with a 13-7 conference record. They beat No. 8 Cal Poly, 59-54, in the quarterfinal after they received a bye in the first round.
Sophomore guard Gracie Gallegos led UC San Diego with 24 points, seven rebounds and three assists in the championship game. She was 6-for-12 from the floor and made 12 of 14 shots from the free throw line.
Junior guard Sabrina Ma scored 15 points, sophomore guard Sumayah Sugapong scored 11 points and sophomore power forward Erin Condron scored 10 points off the bench.
