San Diego dominated early and scored often in the opening half of a 53-0 shutout of Arizona State to conclude the College Rugby Association of America (CRAA) regular season with an unbeaten 5-0 record.
They’ll host the California state championship on Saturday, April 5 at USD’s Manchester Field which would earn them a trip to the West Regional in Washington state later in April.
Win that and the Toreros would be a final four team in Indianapolis, Ind. on May 2-4 with a shot at the D1AA Men’s National Championship.
The regular season finale matchup between San Diego and Arizona State was a rematch of a previous match played on Feb. 15 in Tempe, Ariz. that ended in a 39-12 Toreros victory.
Right wing Jackson Short and flanker Sam Carlson scored in the first half. Center Paul Habeeb scored in each half and Josh Butler, who entered around the 50th minute, scored two tries in the final five minutes of an otherwise uneventful second half.
The Toreros led 34-0 and scored 6 of their 9 tries in the opening half.
Despite all the scoring, the Arizona State defense held the Toreros at the tryline twice in each half and prevented an even higher-scoring match.
Up next: The Toreros host American River in the California Division championship on Saturday, April 5 for the right to move on to the West regional in Washington state.
