The Aztecs went into the night with a perfect 4-0 record on the road and a 3-1 record against conference opponents. They took an early 17-0 lead and rode that lead to victory as the game went final with a 20-17 victory.
Ryan Agnew and the San Diego State Aztecs went unsuccessful on their first drive before taking a three-minute, 90-yard drive for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead. Starting kicker Matt Araiza added on a point for a 7-point lead.
The Aztecs put up seven more in the first quarter after Trenton Thompson blocked the punt and Caden McDonald picked it up for a 14-0 lead after another Araiza extra point.
Matt Araiza kicked a 25-yard field goal to push the Aztecs lead to 17-0 and they finished the half with a 17-7 lead over the UNLV Rebels.
Both teams exchanged field goals in the third quarter to make the score 20-10 before the Rebels threw for a touchdown and kicked the extra point in the fourth quarter to make it a 3-point ballgame.
The Rebels had an opportunity late in the fourth quarter where they attempted a 42-yard field goal. With 37 seconds left, UNLV missed their field goal, and the Aztecs won.
San Diego State will go into their second and final bye week with a four-game win streak. At 7-1, they’ll face Nevada who currently rank fourth in the Mountain Wes’s West division. Kickoff back at SDCCU Stadium has yet to be determined as they await television details for the big game.
