Aztecs make program history with three All-Americans

The AP All-American award winners were announced Monday morning, with a record three San Diego State players. Kicker/punter Matt Araiza was named a first-team All-American while defensive lineman Cameron Thomas and offensive lineman William Dunkle were named to the second-team.

Araiza punted a total of 3,904 yards in 76 attempts for a FBS-record setting 51.4 yards per punt average. His longest punt went 86 yards. He also made four total tackles on punt returns this season, three solo tackles and an assist.

The Rancho Bernardo High alum also became the first player in program history to win a major award for his position, winning the Ray Guy Award which is given at the end of each college football season to the best punter in Division 1’s FBS division.

Thomas, the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year, was named to the second-team after tallying 68 total tackles (30 solo and 38 assists), 10.5 sacks and a fumble forced.

The San Diego State Aztecs (11-2) will play their 2021 finale in the Tropical Smoothie Frisco Bowl in Frisco, Tex. when they face the UTSA Roadrunners (12-1), the champions of the Conference USA on Tuesday, Dec. 21 at 4:30 p.m. PT.
