With a spot for representing the Western Division in the Mountain West Conference Championship on the line, the San Diego State Aztecs and Hawaii Rainbow Warriors faced off in a hard-fought battle.
The Warriors got on the board first, with 3:43 left in the first quarter, on an eight-yard reception by Hawaii’s Jason-Matthew Sharsh to put them up 7-0.
In the second quarter, the San Diego State defense held Hawaii to no points, forcing a punt and making an interception on three separate drives. On the Aztecs’ final drive of the half, they made it on the board on a 27-yard field goal by freshman kicker Matt Araiza.
Hawaii led 7-3 after a dull first half. The Aztecs defense was doing what it had been doing all season long, stopping one of the best offenses in the Mountain West, but the offense, led by senior quarterback Ryan Agnew, could not score against Hawaii’s defense.
The Warriors got back on the board in the third quarter with a 11-yard rushing touchdown by running back Fred Holly III. Ryan Meskell’s kick made it a 14-3 ballgame for Hawaii.
The next drive, one that took 16 plays and stretched between two quarters, put the Aztecs right back in the race as Agnew ran for a five-yard touchdown. The Aztecs decided to go for two points and Agnew ran the two yards needed to make it a three-point ballgame late in the game.
With only eight seconds to go and the game on the line, the Aztecs opted for Araiza to attempt a 48-yard field goal to tie up the game for a chance at overtime. However, Araiza missed the kick, ending the game as Hawaii had the ball for the final two seconds.
The Aztecs will come back home to SDCCU Stadium for the final game of the season on Saturday against Brigham Young (BYU). Kickoff will come at 6 p.m. for Senior Night.
