Araiza forgoes senior year, declares for NFL draft

San Diego State All-American kicker/punter Matt Araiza announced via social media Tuesday morning that he would forgo his senior season and declare for the 2022 NFL Draft.

Araiza led college football with 4,044 total punting yards and averaged 51.2 yards per punt. He became the first 4,000-yard punter in FBS since Idaho’s Bobby Cowan in 2011.

Araiza became the first major national award winner, winning the Ray Guy award for the nation’s best punter in college football. He also took home the Mountain West Conference Special Teams Player of the Year and was a unanimous first-team All-American.

On the defensive side, Araiza made six total tackles, including three solo tackles during the 2021 season. In San Diego State’s 33-31 victory over Utah, Araiza made two tackle assists and one solo tackle.

Despite punters historically not being drafted and instead signed as an undrafted free agent, Araiza is projected for a fourth- or fifth-round selection. The Aztec Nation wishes Matt Araiza a great NFL career.
