Major League Baseball announced the Mariano Rivera (A.L.) and Trevor Hoffman (N.L.) Relievers of the Year on Saturday, and despite being named a finalist and having some of the best stats in the league, Kirby Yates was not named the National League’s top relief pitcher.

Instead, Milwaukee’s Josh Hader received the honor.

While owning the best earned run average (ERA) among qualified relief pitchers and being the 2019 saves leader, Yates deserved the award much more than Hader did at any point this season.

Yates’ ERA (1.19) is almost 1.5 points better than Hader’s (2.62). They both had the same number of save opportunities, but Hader blew seven saves while Yates only blew three of them.

Yates even gave up fewer earned runs (8) than Hader gave up home runs (15). Yates also gave up only two roundtrippers to opposing batters.

The Hawaii-native Yates, may have been a bit more on the wild side than the Maryland-native Hader, hitting seven batters and throwing two wild pitches. Hader hit just four hitters and threw no wild pitches.

Yates only pitched 60 ⅔ innings compared to Hader’s 75 ⅔ innings, which some people are of the opinion that Hader had many more opportunities to give up more runs and home runs than Yates did. However, Yates still led Hader in home runs (0.3 to 1.8) and walks (1.9 to 2.4) per nine innings.

The only stat Hader did extraordinarily better than Yates was in strikeouts. Hader struck out an average of 16.4 hitters per nine innings, while Yates only struck out an average of 15, which ranked third in the N.L. behind Hader and New York’s Edwin Diaz (15.4).
