A week after Manny Machado stated he would opt out of his contract following the end of the 2023 MLB season, Machado and the San Diego Padres have reportedly agreed to a new 11-year contract that will keep him in a Padres uniform through the 2033 season, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
After finishing second in the National League MVP voting last year, Machado saw a free agent market with less-talented players getting more money than he did four years ago and decided he would use his opt out with five years and $150M remaining on his contract.
With the new deal, Machado will get a total of $470M over 15 years with the Padres where he is under contract through his age-41 season.
Machado joins a core of Fernando Tatis Jr., Xander Bogaerts, Joe Musgrove, and Yu Darvish locked up through at least the 2027 season.
In four seasons with the Padres since signing a 10-year deal in Feb. 2019, the 30-year-old third baseman has hit .280/.352/.504 in 519 games. Since 2019, Machado has missed just 27 possible games across four years.
Machado has stated he wants to have a long career like Nelson Cruz, who he was teammates with in Baltimore and once again in San Diego this season in Cruz’s age-42 season.
The Padres begin their 2023 run for a World Series championship on Mar. 30 at Petco Park as they open their season with the Colorado Rockies.
