Thursday, Major League Baseball (MLB) named three finalists for each position for the gold glove award. Padres’ outfielder Hunter Renfroe and catcher Austin Hedges were each listed as a finalist.
Renfroe, 27, quickly turned into one of the most elite defenders. He goes against Juan Soto (Nationals) and David Peralta (D-Backs) for the left fielder’s gold glove award.
Renfroe drastically improved his defensive game over the years, enough to earn a gold glove award in his fourth season as a big leaguer.
In his rookie season in 2017, Renfroe played exclusively as a right fielder. He made nine errors in 1,015 innings and 222 chances. Renfroe had only one defensive run saved (DRS).
Within two years, Renfroe played left, center and right field while making just two errors with 236 chances. His DRS went up to 11, which leads both Peralta (10) and Soto (1).
Hedges, 27, has been known as one of the top defenders in the league since he made his debut in 2015. HIs competition for the award include the better-known Yadier Molina (Cardinals) and J.T. Realmuto (Phillies).
Hedges made 11 errors in 813 innings and 904 chances. His 22 defensive runs saved leads all N.L. catchers in 2019. Hedges’ stolen base attempts made a huge drop as did his runners caught stealing numbers as well.
The two players took the extra step to winning the award by being named one of three finalists for each position. Now they’ll get their shot at the golden award.
