The Padres re-signed right-handed reliever Craig Stammen to a guaranteed two-year, $9M deal, with a $4M option, or $1M buyout, for a third year on Saturday, per MLB Network’s Ken Rosenthal.
Stammen spent the past three years with San Diego, and recorded a 3.06 ERA in 209 appearances. With 241.1 innings pitched, the 35-year-old struck hitters out almost nine times per nine innings.
After a year where the Padres ranked 18th in pitching ERA, general manager AJ Preller has made the moves to improve as a club, including signings of free agents Drew Pomeranz and Pierce Johnson, and a trade for right-handed starter Zach Davies.
Stammen, who has spent parts of 10 seasons in the big leagues, will play a reliable role for the Padres for the length of his contract, and be a mentor to young prospects on the rise.
The club has not confirmed the signing as of the posting of this article.
