It was only a matter of time before the Austin Nola days behind the plate would be over, and with Luis Campusano returning from the 60-day injured list, Nola has been optioned to Triple-A for the first time since his first major-league callup in 2019.
Along with this was a series of roster moves that included seven players. Outfielder Taylor Kohlwey had his contract selected and infielder Alfonso Rivas was recalled from Triple-A El Paso. To make room, utility player Rougned Odor was designated for assignment, right-handed pitcher Reiss Knehr (right elbow strain) was transferred to the 60-day injured list, and utility player Brandon Dixon was optioned to Triple-A El Paso.
Campusano was placed on the 10-day injured list in April and underwent surgery for his thumb injury. In eight rehab games with the Arizona League Padres (three games) and Triple-A El Paso (five games), he hit .280 with a home run and five RBI’s. Campusano will likely give Gary Sanchez more breaks behind the plate as Sanchez has played in 10 of 11 games since July 2.
Nola hit .146/.260/.192 (.452 OPS) in 52 games this season with the Padres before he was optioned.
Odor signed with the Padres on March 1 on a minor-league deal and made the major-league roster out of spring training. Since then, he hit .210 with a .676 OPS with four home runs and 18 RBI’s. He played second base (30 games), third base (nine games), right field (nine games), and first base (one game) this season.
Among the callups is Kohlwey. Kohlwey hit .261/.377/.437 (.814 OPS) in 78 games at the Triple-A level this season with nine home runs and 49 RBI’s. He played all outfield positions and first base for the El Paso Chihuahuas this year. This is his first major-league callup after seven minor-league seasons. The 28-year-old outfielder was the Padres’ 21st round pick in the 2016 MLB Amateur Draft.
Also called up in a trio of reinforcements is left-handed hitter Rivas. Rivas previously played in four games last month for the Padres and was optioned on June 13. He spent a week at the end of June on the injured list. The Chula Vista-native primarily played first base but also appeared in seven games in the corner outfield positions in El Paso.
The Padres’ 40-man roster remains full at 40 players.
They continue their 10-game road trip out of the All-Star break Tuesday with the series opener north of the border with the Toronto Blue Jays.
