Monday afternoon, the Padres set their 40-man roster to officially begin the offseason. The Padres had 51 players on their roster, including all their players on the 60-day injured list, to begin the winter.
Pitchers Craig Stammen, Aaron Loup, Adam Warren and Robbie Erlin elected free agency for various reasons. Stammen’ contract ended while Loup and Warren’s team option was declined. Robbie Erlin was outrighted off the roster and elected free agency.
Right-handed reliever Robert Stock was claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Phillies and Brett Kennedy was outrighted to Triple-A El Paso last week.
Activated from the 60-day injured list was infielders Fernando Tatis Jr. (stress reaction in lower back) and Ian Kinsler (herniated cervical disc), outfielder Franchy Cordero (right elbow sprain) and pitchers Jose Castillo (left middle finger), Miguel Diaz (left knee surgery) and Adrian Morejon (shoulder impingement).
The Padres finished off the roster trim by designating pitchers Jacob Nix and Eric Yardley.
Nix, 23, missed the entire year in 2019 due to an elbow strain and rehabbed around the Padres’ farm system beginning on July 26 with Arizona League (AZL) Padres and continued into the offseason with the Peoria Javelinas before getting arrested in Peoria last month.
Yardley, 29, made his debut with the Padres last season. He signed with the Padres as an undrafted free agent in 2013. Yardley was not a strikeout pitcher as he struck out just 94 hitters in 415 ⅓ combined innings through seven seasons.
The Padres will have seven days maximum to trade, release or outright Yardley. The 29-year-old right-hander will also be available for any team to claim.
San Diego made one trade, which sent outfielder Travis Jankowski to the Cincinnati Reds for international money.
The Padres 40-man roster has been made, and General Manager AJ Preller will have a busy offseason once again as the Padres are expected to make more splash in free agency.
