Quality start for Musgrove key to third straight win

The San Diego Padres have won three in a row for just the second time since their eight-game win streak in San Diego’s Opening Week. Behind a quality six-inning start from Joe Musgrove, the Padres have limited the opponent to five runs over the last three games.

In the second inning, first baseman Eric Hosmer hit a 1-2 changeup for a home run into the right field seats, which at the time tied the ballgame at one run apiece. It was Hosmer’s second game-tying home run in three games.

In the third, Tommy Pham worked a four-pitch walk before Adam Frazier and Manny Machado hit back-to-back singles to take a 2-1 lead. Victor Caratini recorded an RBI single in the fourth before Joe Musgrove earned his first RBI as a Padre, hitting a sac fly to deep right field.

Musgrove went six innings, making it three consecutive starts with a quality start from Padres pitching. The El Cajon native struck out eight batters while walking one.

An inning after Emilio Pagan gave up a two-run home run to Lewis Brinson, making it a one-run ballgame, the offense backed him up with a four-run eighth inning.

Player of the Game:

Joe Musgrove (6IP, 1ER, 8K) continued his 2021 season dominance with his 11th quality start of the season, tying Yu Darvish for the team-lead. Musgrove lowered his ERA by eight points to 2.81, the lowest mark since his June 30 at Cincinnati.

Up next:

Craig Stammen will start a Padres’ bullpen day in the middle game of the three-game set as San Diego goes for another series win. In seven series so far in the second half, the Padres have yet to lose a series, the only team remaining in the MLB without suffering a series loss. First pitch will be at 7:10 p.m. PT from Petco Park.
