So glad that is over.
The San Diego Padres fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates in one of, if not the worst, showing with runners in scoring position baseball has ever seen.
The Friars went 1-for-13 and left 15 runners on base after reaching base 22 times. San Diego walked a club-record 13 times, reached base three times via a hit batter, and recorded six hits.
First baseman Eric Hosmer, and outfielders Jurickson Profar and Jorge Mateo each reached base three times, leading the team Tuesday night. Hosmer hit an RBI single in the fourth inning and walked twice, while Profar earned a bases-loaded walk in the first inning while hitting a single and another walk later on. Mateo walked once, but was hit twice in both wrists by different pitchers.
The pitching was not much better. Starting pitcher Blake Snell couldn’t get out of the first inning, throwing 38 pitches and only getting two outs. The 28-year-old southpaw got a groundout and strikeout early, but could not find the strike zone afterwards. A single, two doubles, two walks and a hit by pitch later, he exited the ballgame.
The Padres will look to bounce back Wednesday as Joe Musgrove (2-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his third start in a Padres uniform, and his first since the first Padres no-no in franchise history. Pittsburgh will start left-handed pitcher Tyler Anderson (0-2, 5.23 ERA). They’ll start at 3:35 p.m. PT at PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Penn.
