No-No Joe: Musgrove throws first no-hitter in Padres history

18,995 days ago, the San Diego Padres made their franchise debut in Major League Baseball. Yesterday, the Padres finished off their first franchise no-hitter by hometown kid Joe Musgrove.

It’s been a long wait for the Friar Faithful, who had to wait the longest of any fanbase to witness their club’s first ever no-hitter, which saw 8,205 games across 53 MLB seasons without a no-no.

Joe Musgrove came into the game with his second career start in a Padres uniform, and first road game with San Diego. In his Padres debut, he gave up just three hits in six shutout innings vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The 28-year-old El Cajon native started off the first-inning with a groundout before striking out Anderson Tejada and Joey Gallo. He would strike out one batter in each of the next four innings before hitting Gallo in the fourth, ending the perfect game after retiring the first 11 batters.

The former first-round draft pick struck out Texas left fielder Eli White to start the sixth and finished the frame with a punchout of shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Musgrove’s seventh inning went the same way, striking out Tejada to begin the inning and Lowe to finish off the seventh.

“Java Joe” got four groundouts and two lineouts directly at right fielder Myers and second baseman Cronenworth in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, with Ha-Seong Kim fielding the final out of the night that got the Padres their first no-hitter in franchise history.

Musgrove now leads all of the major leagues with 15 innings pitched, a complete game, a shutout, a 0.00 ERA, 0.0 walks-per-9, 0.0 home runs-per-9, and a 0.97 FIP. He has 15 scoreless innings and 18 strikeouts to begin his Padres tenure.
