On a sunny day in Surprise, Ariz., the San Diego Padres tied their second game in three days after a two-run ninth by the Kansas City Royals.
Tommy Pham led off the day with a home run over the right field fence. In the third, Pham hit a two-run, game-tying homer for his second in as many at-bats. Since going 0-for-19 to start the spring, Pham has 11 hits in the last 18, along with two walks for a .650 on-base percentage.
San Diego-native Joe Musgrove struggled in his third spring start of 2021. Despite striking out five hitters in four innings, Musgrove gave up five runs and eight hits.
Emilio Pagan relieved Musgrove in the fifth and struck out two batters while giving up a home run to Kansas City right fielder Hunter Dozier.
Left-handed pitcher Nick Ramirez took over the sixth inning where he walked and struck out one batter. Michel Baez pitched an inning, striking out two batters and giving up a home run.
San Diego hitters rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to take a one-run lead with three doubles by Jorge Mateo, John Andreoli and Padres’ no. 6 prospect Tucupita Marcano. Catcher Juan Fernandez hit a solo shot in the top of the ninth to extend the Padres’ lead to two.
Padres no. 11 prospect Mason Thompson threw a hitless eighth inning to Royals prospects. Former big leaguer Miguel Diaz struggled in the ninth after giving up back-to-back one-out singles before minor league third baseman Emmanuel Rivera hit a two-run double to tie the ballgame. Fortunately, right fielder Ben Ruta cut Rivera down at third base to end the ballgame.
