Padres go for first sweep since June

With a four-game win streak on the line, the San Diego Padres (66-49) look for the sweep of the Miami Marlins (47-67). The Padres have not swept a series since they swept the Dodgers at home June 21-23.

San Diego was down 3-0 before walking up to the plate, but scored twice in the first inning, once in the second, and took the lead in the fourth inning. When Miami tied the game in the top of the seventh, Adam Frazier led off with a base hit and scored on a two-out single from Austin Nola.

With their win last night, the Padres won their seventh season series with a 4-2 record over the Marlins. Among seven series so far against NL East teams, San Diego has not swept any of them yet, going 11-12 against that division before the current Miami series.

Ryan Weathers will get the start for the Padres amidst a rough stretch for the 21-year-old rookie. Weathers owned a 2.73 ERA in his first 18 games (12 starts), but in his last two, that has jumped to 4.26 after giving up 14 earned runs over seven innings.

In his one career start against the Marlins, Weathers threw four scoreless innings, but struggled with command as he gave up three walks and a hit batter.

The Marlins will start 25-year-old Sandy Alcantara in his fifth season in the big leagues. Alcantara owns a 3.70 ERA and 1.17 WHIP across 23 starts this season, the most since his all-star rookie season in 2019.

Alcantara is coming off the worst start of his career. He gave up 10 runs (all earned) in 3⅔ innings, while striking out one batter at Coors Field. Before his last start, the right-hander had a 3.12 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 132 innings.

Players to Watch:

Miguel Rojas (MIA)

The 32-year-old infielder recorded two hits in each of the first two games this series and has six hits in six games this season against the Padres. In his career, Rojas bats just .205 against the Padres, but has improved against San Diego this season.

Trent Grisham (SD)

The gold glove center fielder is back in the leadoff spot Wednesday with Tommy Pham getting the day off. Grisham is hitting for a .476/.577/.810 slash line since his 0-for-21 streak, and has been San Diego’s hottest hitter this season.
