Musgrove, Padres open 3-game series with Marlins

Following a home series win over the last-place D-Backs, the San Diego Padres (64-49) open a three-game series with the Miami Marlins (47-65) to finish the season series.

As part of the second-half opening road trip, the Padres went into Miami and split a four-game series, making a tie in the season series with the Marlins going into Monday night’s game. The Padres, of nine completed season series, have won five of them (CIN, PIT, SEA, STL, WSH). They have lost three (CHC, MIL, NYM) and split one (OAK) so far.

Joe Musgrove looks to get the three-game set as the two pitchers before him have each gone seven innings. Saturday and Sunday were the first time two San Diego starters went seven innings in back-to-back games this season, and Musgrove will look to make it three.

The right-handed pitcher from El Cajon leads the Padres starting rotation with five games of going at least seven frames. In his previous start against the Marlins, Musgrove went six innings, gave up two runs on six hits, and struck out four Miami batters.

The Marlins will send right-handed pitcher Zach Thompson to the mound for the season opener in San Diego. Thompson owns a 2.53 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in nine starts. The rookie suffered his third loss of the season when he faced the Padres, giving up three runs on six hits in five innings.

Players to Watch:

Jesus Aguilar (MIA)

The Miami first baseman is a career 4-for-9 hitter off Padres starter Joe Musgrove, hitting two home runs and owns a .821 OPS against right-handed pitchers. Although San Diego limited him to three hits over 15 at-bats and a .591 OPS last month, Aguilar has a .931 OPS on the road versus a .678 OPS at Marlins Park.

Adam Frazier (SD)

Since starting his Padre tenure going 4-for-24 (.167 BA), the Padres all-star trade deadline acquisition has hit .467/.529/.533 (1.063 OPS) in four games. Frazier is also a .302 career hitter against the Marlins, and recorded four RBIs, hitting 6-for-17 (.353), with the Pirates earlier this season against the Marlins.
