Padres look to even series behind Darvish

After a gut-wrenching loss to the MLB-worst Arizona Diamondbacks (35-76), the San Diego Padres (62-49) will try to even the home series behind a start from Yu Darvish.

The Padres’ recent struggles have come with starting pitching not going far into games, as Weathers could not get an out in the fourth inning of Friday night’s 8-5 loss, despite being given a 5-0 lead through two frames. Weathers finished with three-plus innings, seven hits allowed, six earned runs, and striking out just one batter.

Yu Darvish looks to flip the script after a miserable July, where he owned a 5.50 ERA in five starts. His season ERA has risen 104 points since his last quality start (6 IP, 1 ER) against Arizona June 27.

For the Diamondbacks, it will be right-handed pitcher Taylor Widener. The 26-year-old rookie has not faced San Diego since the opening series, where he threw six shutout innings, earning his first (and only) big league win.

Players to Watch:

Ketel Marte (ARI)

Marte hit 3-for-3 this season off Darvish, with a home run and a double. Over his career, the Arizona outfielder is 5-for-12 against the San Diego starting pitcher. In the last 15 games, he owns a .382/.443/.491 slash line against opposing pitching.

Eric Hosmer (SD)

The Padres veteran first baseman has hit a great stretch recently, slashing .333/.410/.452 in his last 93 ABs over his last 30 games. In his career, he is 2-for-4 against Widener with a double and a home run.
