San Diego Padres General Manager A.J. Preller announced to the media before Sunday’s game that Fernando Tatis Jr. has been reinstated from the 10-day injured list and will start in right field for the series finale in Arizona.
In 87 games this season, Tatis Jr. batted .292/.373/.651/1.024 and led the National League in home runs (31), stolen bases (23), slugging percentage (.651) and on base + slugging (OPS) (1.024). He was named to his first all-star game and started at shortstop for the N.L.
To make room for the NL MVP, San Diego optioned outfielder Brian O’Grady to Triple-A El Paso.
Yu Darvish, who left Thursday’s game with lower back tightness, which caused him to miss some time after the all-star break, was placed on the injured list.
Preller said Darvish could come back next week, which would make him miss one start. The earliest he could be reinstated from the 10-day injured list will be Aug. 22, which would be his normal start day with the off day on Thursday.
Right-handed pitcher Reiss Knehr will get his third callup this season as he likely takes Darvish’s spot in the rotation for his next start on Tuesday at Coors Field.
Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union Tribune reported that the Padres are looking at starting pitching in the free agent market. One possibility could be Jake Arrieta, who was released Aug. 12 by the Chicago Cubs.
Other available starting pitchers who have pitched in the major leagues this season include right-handed pitchers Jerad Eickhoff (age 30), Aaron Sanchez (28), and left-handed pitchers Tyler Anderson (31) and Tom Milone (34).
The Padres take on the Arizona Diamondbacks Sunday at 1:10 p.m. PT as they look to avoid the four-game sweep at the hands of the owner of the worst record in baseball.
